Review: Lousiana Monroe
9-5-04
By: Mark
Well,
it looks like Auburn has gone back to the tradition of playing terrible
teams for their first game of the season, and because the Mississippi
School for the Blind refused to play us, we had to settle for Louisiana
Monroe.
I don’t
want to be too politically correct here, but I don’t think
team’s mascots should be the Indians. It makes things awkward
for the teams they play. Many Auburn groups and organizations have
to make posters saying “Kill the [insert opposing team mascot
here]”. Saying “Scalp the Indians” is not very
politically correct.
And
they can’t change the name to “the kittens” either.
We
have every right to be vicious to the mascot’s name before
the game, it’s part of the fun of college football, it’s
their fault for making us make posters that say that. We don’t
have any problems with making posters that say “Gut the Crimson
Tide and eat their young”. This just won’t work for
Indians.
Ok,
now for the in game thoughts. I don’t like the new policy
of not letting students come and go out of the student section.
How are we expected to sneak our friends into the student section
now?
I was
happy with the turnout to such a low excitement game, and I was
also happy to see how most people stayed until at least the fourth
quarter.
I like
the Carnell-Heavy offense.
I was
kind of scared to see Brandon Cox be so good, I don’t want
a quarterback battle. Keep in mind that his touchdown had such incredible
blocking, even I could’ve ran in for the touchdown.
While
we didn’t completely tear the Indians apart, I think we saw
a lot of promise. We actually effectively attacked a few different
ways.
I might
be wrong, but Ronnie Brown seems to have lost a little speed (maybe
it’s because it’s easier to compare him with Caddy,
since they’re both on the field now), but he can block like
crazy.
Where
did these good kickers come from? When was the last time we were
able to consistently kick and punt into the end zone?
Good
starter game, now bring on LSU in 2 weeks.
War
Eagle.
